As carriers scramble to compensate for the “driver shortage” that’s creating a panic in the trucking industry, they look for ways to reduce driver turnover.  This isn’t a new problem, as driver retention was an issue since the first truck hit the highways years ago, but the situation is getting worse.

Professional drivers don’t always identify with their neighbors, particularly those who might live next door to them who spend their days at work and their nights at home.  Instead, many of you feel closer to your peers on the road.  These are your “neighbors” on wheels.

A psychologist invented a color test to identify your hidden mood and what stresses you.  Dr. Max Luscher felt that your favorite color could describe your dominant qualities.  His research showed that folks who choose black as a favorite color are rebellious and are protesting against a situation that you feel is hopeless (perhaps he was referring to the cost of oil?)

After removing my shoes and jacket and placing my laptop on the conveyor belt, I waited for the TSA official to wave me through the metal detector at the airport.  An elderly couple in front of me was being searched, and to their horror, the official pulled a peanut butter and jelly sandwich from their bag.  He berated them for “violating the rules,” and for attempting to hide the contraband from authorities.  As they walked away without their lunch, my first reaction was disdain for such a ridiculous “rule.”

Fortunately, not every feels this way or we would all be counting the days until our retirement party. However, it’s much easier to change jobs now than it was only a generation earlier.  Your parents or grandparents might have stayed at the same company for decades. As long as they worked hard and were dedicated to the business, they were assured of a long tenure.
